Subject: Presidents’ Council Update on Charter Schools and Petition for Local Control Over New Charter School Approvals
Dear Families,
As we communicated last week, the two charter schools proposed that would have drawn students from the South Orange Maplewood School District were not approved by the NJ State Department of Education.
However, until communities have a say in whether charters open within their areas, we will face this issue year after year.
There are charter reform bills working their way through our state government and we need to show our strong support for them. The bills have passed the Assembly but they are yet to be passed in the Senate.
There is a Senate Education Committee meeting on October 13th and Save Our Schools has generated a petition that they feel will have an impact on that meeting. A link to the petition is below.
Your signature generates letters to your State Senator, NJ Senate President Steve Sweeney, and members of the NJ Senate Education Committee, letting them know that you want local control over the creation of new charter schools in your community.
The petition asks for your name and address in order to determine which Senator represents your district. If you do not want your name displayed publicly, simply uncheck the box under your address.
To read and sign the petition, click here.
Thank you for all you are doing! It is having a big impact.

Tomorrow October 6th is the first day of the Clinton PTA After School Enrichment Program. Please remind your child in the morning that they will be going directly to the gym at dismissal.
If your child attends the ASP program now run by the Y, you must have a late arrival form on file with them in order for your child to participate. If you have any questions regarding the forms, please contact Ms. Kim who directs the program at Clinton.
Dismissal is at 3:45pm and we ask that you enter through the front door of the school and proceed to your child’s classroom to sign them out. There will be a sign posted at the front listing the class locations as well as proctors to help direct you. Please make sure that the person signing out your child is someone that you listed on your registration form.
If your child attends the ASP program at Clinton, they will be escorted as a group back to Ms. Kim at the ASP program in the cafeteria.
If you have any questions please contact Erica Dussman.
