Special Education

South Orange Maplewood Special Education Parent Teacher Organization mission statement:

The South Orange Maplewood Special Education Parent Teacher Organization works to make a difference in the lives of all children with special needs. Our goal is to promote the welfare of the special education student by providing parents with the tools and information they need to work collaboratively with the school district and to be more effective advocates for their children. Each year, the Special Ed PTO holds several meetings to help parents network with other parents, share information about Special Education issues and educational concerns, and understand changing special education laws. We support the on-going professional development of district staff regarding special education and encourage the inclusion of children with disabilities in our communities. We seek and welcome the active involvement of all parents of children receiving special education services in South Orange-Maplewood.

Membership is free. All parents who have a child receiving special education services in the district or who live in the district but whose child is in an out-of-district special ed placement are already members of the Special Ed PTO.

Meetings are held in the Board of Education meeting room at 525 Academy Street, Maplewood, and begin at 7:30pm and end at 9pm.

Scheduled meetings for the remainder of the 2009-2010 school year are February 4, March 31, and June 1.

If you are not able to attend the Special Ed PTO meeting and would like to receive minutes of the meeting please email Barry Berg and he will add you to the email list so you may stay informed: barryaberg@comcast.net
